The Causeway, Sunset

After her conversation with Billy yesterday, Leda had a hard time deciding what to do. Finally, she had determined that she did not have to choose. She had spent all night and most of today recording what she knew of Faerie and Bordertown so there would be something left behind if nothing else remained.

Now she stood at the end of the causeway, steeling herself.

[This will be Leda's final post till all this is over. If anyone wants to have a dramatic tearful farewell, this is the place to do it :D]

Billy guessed Leda had gotten his number from the new 'directory' up at the school. He met her down by the causeway after picking up the items she'd left for him.

"I get why you're doing this." he said. "I'm not going to try to talk you out of it. Though I am tempted to knock you out and stash you someplace safe. That's how I wound up here."

Leda snickered. "Don't try it pal, I've got magic tricks. 'Sides you think I went to all the trouble of compiling that dossier for nothing?"

"I do have one question though. Why, of all the people on this island, did you leave that with me?"

Honestly, Karla had spent some time debating whether or not to show up after getting Leda's message. Not because of Leda herself, no; it was just after saying goodbye to Dinah, Karla wasn't sure she would be able to handle another goodbye.

But, in the end, she'd gone. There wasn't really a choice, was there? It wasn't about how much Karla could bear, it was about seeing a friend off to be brave and do her duty. Karla couldn't leave Leda to go off without even a goodbye.

Especially not when that same choice was brewing for her.

"Kiss kiss," she said, sounding tired. "You didn't think you'd get to leave without saying goodbye, did you?"

"Nah not really. I'm totally not sneaky enough for that." Leda replied, also sounding tired. "Though when I said I hoped I'd get to see you again, this isn't what I meant." Not being able to come up with the right words just now, she resorted to a joke.

"If it had been, we'd be having words right now," Karla admitted, just going with the banter. "This is hardly my top ten best reunion moments."

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, goodbyes generally aren't the best kind of reunion." Leda agreed. Then, throwing decorum to the wind, she flung her arms around Karla in a fierce hug.

Karla didn't even hesitate, clutching at Leda and squeezing. Maybe if she didn't let go, Leda would have to stay?

"I should smack you," she mumbled into Leda's hair. "For making it sound like I'd need a book to remember you or your people."

Well she sure wasn't bringing Karla with her. Tempting as that was.

"What you don't like reading?" she teased. She couldn't resist. All this was way heavier than she was used to dealing with. "There's pictures too."

Reluctantly, she let go. "I know you'll remember us." she said seriously. "The book is for holding up a listing couch...well you know."

"Oh. Well if there are pictures..." Karla said, letting her arms fall back to her sides. "I know. I'll make sure it stays here, where people can look through it and remember. So no matter what happens, your people won't be forgotten."

"You can thank me for that later, once this is fixed. Okay?"

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I will thank you with words and unhealthy delicious foods. And maybe even one of those cards that plays music when you open them." Leda assured her. "Cause when I get back, after this is fixed there's going to be a party. I may be out of my jurisdiction here but I doubt many people will object to such a decree."

And if she didn't get going, she was going to lose her nerve. "Goodbye Karla. No, not goodbye. See you later."

"I'll back your party plan," Karla promised. "Two Queens at once, who could say no to that?"

Her lower lip trembled as Leda said goodbye, but she refused to let the tears fall. She would show her friend off with a stiff chin, if she couldn't quite muster up a smile. Leda deserved that much. "See you soon," she corrected, voice thick. "I'm so very pr-proud of you. Of who you've become. Not just as a Queen. As a person."

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh great she was totally going to cry. Instead, she managed her old cocky smirk, curtsied, and sauntered off down the causeway.

"See you soon June!" she called out just before she disappeared into the mist. "You have big fun now!"

Karla waved until Leda was out of sight, staying just a bit longer in case the Causeway didn't work right.

And then, when she was sure Leda had gone, only then did she give into tears.
