"Leda. It's Karla. I'm hosting a sleeping over party Thursday night, and I'd really, really, really like you to be there. It's important. I can tell you more later, but it's information I don't really want getting out, so I won't leave it here. Thanks."
"Hey Leda, it's Karla. Just got your message. We're going to have to give people more notice--for one thing, I'll be in Kaeleer all weekend. I should be back on Monday, though, so we can talk then. I'll see you then, okay? I'll miss you."
"Hey, Leda. It's 'turn nearly everyone into kids' weekend here, and I thought I'd check in and make sure the crack fairy missed you, especially with all the crap going on. I hope it did, but if I don't hear from you by Tuesday, I'm going to assume that something happened and maybe call in the troops."
Mun ignored V-Day, and actually managed to forget about it. Leda didn't. Consider Momoko the recipient of a late Valentine gift of a bottle of Elven wine from her family's own vinyard.
Even if his GrandMun had forgotten, Alberto remembered that Monday was his godmother's birthday. Which meant a phone call was in order, at least!
"Hey Aunt Leda! It's 'Berto. Just calling to wish you a Happy Birthday!" There was a pause and then, "Oh! And if this is actually you in the past, I'm Alberto Reyes. You're friends with my mom, Momoko? From Fandom Island? I got portal-napped, so Lena and I are visiting for a few days."
Late Late late! Momoko's package for Leda's birthday finally arrived! Hopefully someone was around to pick it up or sign for it or SOMETHING, since Momoko hadn't known Leda was still out travelling.
Inside the box was a skirt that Momoko had thought totally awesome and perfect for her friend, and a sort of joke gift that she hoped Leda hadn't changed too much to appreciate.
There was also what looked like a steampunk pocket-watch included. Obviously gear operated, when opened Leda would find it was missing a minute hand! She may want to call Momoko to explain that...
The package wound up being delivered to Leda while she was waiting for her portal to Galway.
She absolutely adored the skirt, and determined that she would wear it the first chance she got. And the toilet paper had her giggling like she had not done in a long time.
And the watch was pretty. It went well with the vest she was wearing, and she arranged it so it hung from it just right. It wasn't until the second time she opened it that she noticed there was no minute hand. She wondered if that was deliberate or if it had gotten damaged in transit.
In any case, she owed Momo a thank you. She started to compose a text, when she frowned at herself. No. She wasn't going to chicken out like that this time.
"Leeeeedaaaaa!" Momoko had just finished feeding her crabs (she really needed to name them properly) and she flopped back onto her bed to watch them crawl over each other to get at it. "Hi hi! How are you?"
It was so good to hear Momo's voice again. "I'm great! I just finished the American leg of my trip, and now I'm waiting for a portal to Ireland. See, I found out that I'd had some human cousins a generation or so back, and I went and checked out where they lived. Now I'm looking up my roots in the UK." And to think she'd avoided talking to anyone about this.
"IRELAND!" Wow! "That's exciting! I've never been there; you totally have to send pictures, okay? Have you found any of your cousins? Are they nice?"
Momoko bounced, relieved. "And you got the presents? Finally! I sent it earlier but there was something wrong and it got sent back to me. So glad! Do you like the skirt? I saw it and it was totally you. Or, old you at least. I didn't offend you or anything, right?"
Old her. Well that was nailing the...no, hitting the nail on the head, right. That was part of what this whole trip was about, seeing if she could recapture a very important part of the old her. She decided to skip correcting Momo about the cousin thing, that they had all died before Leda had been born.
"I love it!" she said, forcing a smile onto her face and into her voice. "I'm gonna wear it as soon as I can. And I bet I can start a new fashion in B-Town next time I go. I also love the toilet paper, and I'm already wearing the watch. It's supposed to be missing the minute hand right?"
"Oh oh oh! THAT!" Momoko was bouncing very happily now!
"It's a calendar! Sort of. The Professor and Ken made it for me! It's not showing the hour, it's showing the month! that's why there's no minute hand. The smaller dial should go to thirty-one? It's what day it is!"
Momoko was hoping it would help and Leda wouldn't get lost in time again.
"The wind-y thing at the top winds so it keeps it going; it's not electric so I hope it works? And if you push that wind-y button in? a small compartment opens that tells you the year! I wanted it to be easier, but that's the best they could do. Especially since I made them make it look totally cool. You wouldn't believe how they wanted to make it look. Ugh."
[ooc: feel free to make it not actually work or something. She's used to the Professor and Ken's stuff not working.]
Leda took out the watch, and looked at it again. "Oh! Oh that's really cool!" She opened the compartment to check the year. "Tick Tick explained...well she tried to explain how anything mechanical works in Elfland once. The gist I got was that things like this should work. How often do you need to wind these things by the way?"
She gave the watch/calendar a jaunty twirl from the chain and tried to pop it back into the pocket with a fancy move she'd seen in a movie once. Didn't work, she'd have to practice that one. "Be sure to thank them for me. How've you been?"
"It was either once a day or once a week? I can't remember. I'll double check and let you know." Momoko had her fingers crossed that it worked! She didn't want Leda to lose time again; maybe next time Momoko would be the one who was older!
"It's been a weird few days? I went back to the island to mail your packages and those future maybe kids happened again. So totally weird this time, but it made me feel better about some stuff."
Leda never had any future children show up. Every weekend like that that passed she became more and more certain that meant she'd never have any. Part of the reason she adopted so many. Later she would realize that this conviction meant that she did still have a little of her old perspective left.
"Any repeat visitors? And no, I didn't hear about that. Where are you moving to?"
"Mmm. Karla's kids came back, Kayla and Nommy? They were the wrong ages again, though. This time Nommy was a teenager and Kayla was little," Momoko chuckled. "Which she totally didn't like. Sin came back, only this time she was both mine and Dinah's. And we had a son together who wasn't adopted."
Figure that one out, Leda.
"That's it, though. I had another daughter show up. I was raising her alone in Japan. Dinah and Priestly had teen kids show up that didn't even know Fandom existed! Which was weird; they totally hated every minute of being there."
"As for moving..." Momoko sank back to her bed, shaking her head. "I narrowed it down to Jaime's world or Dinah's. It took a while, but I realized that moving to Dinah's would mean I might mess up her work. So I chose Jaime's world." Bordertown had been in the top three, but...
While Leda would totally recommend Bordertown to anyone, she was also aware it wasn't for everyone.
Leda realized that aside from Momoko, and to a lesser degree Karla, she didn't know much about anyone else's worlds. She figured the deciding factor would have been that it was Jaime's world.
"How would you living in Dinah's world mess up her work? What does she do?"
Bordertown had been ruled out mostly because Momoko didn't want to be a cop anymore, and that's what Bordertown needed.
"Dinah's in school to be a private detective and in her spare time she's a vigilante hero. She and her sister fight criminals and things, but in secret." Momoko chuckled ruefully. "I'm totally not the kind of hero who can hide."
Bright pink costume aside, it just wasn't in Momoko.
"But if I do something in the open, it might hurt what Dinah and her team are doing in secret. And I wouldn't be able to help them unless I stay in hiding."
Bordertown didn'ts o much need cops as citizens not afraid (or belligerant enough) to go after bad guys. It had those people to be sure, Stick and Berlin for instance, but it could always use more.
"Hmm, yeah I can see how that could be a problem. so are you gonna be a superhero in Jaime's world?"
"That's the plan. Although I'm also going to be going to college." Ugh. Although looking over the courses, it was becoming more of an interesting idea. "Jaime's world has lots of heroes, just like Dinah's, but Jaime's in school for something totally un-hero-related. Plus his city has other visible heroes like me anyway, so I won't hurt anything."
"I haven't met any, but some of them had alternate thems come to Fandom, so I'm hoping we'll get along. There's even an alternate Dinah there, so that will be interesting."
Momoko reached over for her folder of class information. "There's a bunch of general stuff I have to take, but I'm signing up for the Criminal Justice program. It's something I know, you know?"
"That makes sense." Though, didn't she just say she didn't want to be a cop? Maybe a P.I. "I'm actually thinking of taking some correspondence courses when I get back to Faerie. This trip has been interesting enough that I'm starting to get curious about stuff."
Momoko snickered a little at her friend's response. "I'm totally taking it because it will be easy, Leda. I'm going to try testing out of some classes, even. A new world, a different language... and I'll be working a real job while trying to be a hero without a team? I'm totally going to need something easy."
"Good point. Maybe you could join a team, or form one. Is there like, a union or something you have to go through there?" So, Leda hadn't put anything concrete on her interests yet so she had to try to figure out how to say it. "Well...okay so, when Faerie returned, everyone in the world was suddenly smacked in the face with the fact that most of the creatures they'd spent centuries telling themselves weren't real, were. Real I mean. Now I spent most of my life believing that all their stories were bullshit. But I'm starting to figure that it's just that things are getting all jumbled up in human folklore. So, I'm kinda interested in learning more about that, so I can maybe add an insider's perspective to it."
And just like, Leda decided she was going to write a book. Take that Faery Isolationists!
Leda was making Momoko excited all over again about this move. That there were so many heroes there could be a UNION?! How awesome was that? It was totally right out of a movie or a comic book!
"I don't know. I don't think I can join a team, at least not at first. I'm totally new to the whole world, remember? I doubt they'll let me join when I'm basically an alien." Ahahahaha.
"Ooooh! You could write a book! Or have your own TV show!" She sighed happily. "Queen and famous!"
"A book would probably be easier, though I bet I could figure out a way to do a show." Hmm, use a scrying mirror as a camera... "Might be hard to explain to folks back home what I'm trying to do. Even Elves who've been to Bordertown might not be familiar with television. At most they'd have heard of it as an abstract concept."
"And if they don't let you join a team because of your immigration status I will totally picket their headquarters."
if you ever need people to play certain DC characters, I volunteer.
"You could have a studio audience and let people and Elves mingle! It would be totally awesome!"
She smiled hard at Leda's threat. She loved her friends! "Well, it would make sense to not let some strange alien in when it involves secret identities and stuff. What if I was evil?"
"...Triplets? What? I don't know if you're talking a kinky sex thing or you're announcing your incipient parenthood, but either way we've known each other FAR too long to announce it like that!"
