Room 515, Saturday after Detention

If Leda hadn't been so worn out from Detention, she might have been able to dodge the Gremlin that had been lying in wait. As it was, she wasn't.

My name is Valerie Autumns. From the moment I left New York, and set foot in Corinwood, the shadows of the past have loomed over me like the shadow of this great brooding home. Even the inhabitants of this strange and bizarre place hover uncertainly between amazement, confidence and fear.

Fear of the unknown, fear of the past. Fear of the future. Even fear of each other. From the young boy I've come to tutor, to the father he hates. From the mistress of the house who never leaves to the grounds keeper who's loyalty borders on the sinister. From the man who has returned, possibly with ulterior motives, to the girl who I have come to care for more than I ever thought possible.

The shadow of Corinwood even falls over the town below. It falls over the artist living in fear of his secrets. It falls over his daughter who cares for him and worries. It falls over the young man who just wants a future with his girl.

And now all I can do is try my best to make sense of it all. And try not to let their secrets and their deception deter me from my own search for the truth. I can't let the fear and darkness over come me, or I will become like them. Like everyone has warned me.

Jack knocked on the door. "Armolas! Time for family bonding." He was in the mood for pizza and company.

"David," Vicky Valerie said kindly, smiling warily. "Did you want something?"

"Sure thing, Betty," he said, trying to play along with her name things. "C'mon, let's go get some pizza."

"David have you finished your homework yet?" She asked. Was David up to mischief again?

"David? I'm Jack. Homework's done for a while. So you're not up for pizza?" She was acting a bit odd.

"David, what are up to now? I'd love some pizza, but you're acting a little strange."

"I'm acting a bit strange? You sound a bit out of your gourd," he said, his eyebrows raised.

Valerie looked worried. "What do you mean?"

"Leda, are you okay?"

"David why are you calling me Leda? You know my name is Valerie."

"Leda?" Karla called, popping her head through the open door. "I realized we never--" She stopped, wary. Something was off about Leda's psychic scent. Very off.

"Leda?"

"Oh, Carolyne, come in." Valerie smiled.

Okay, Karla knew Leda liked playing around with names, but this one hadn't rhymed.

"Leda, it's Karla," she said calmly. "Don't you recognize me?"

Valerie looked at Karla, concerned. "Carolyne are you feeling okay?"

Any of the things that Leda drank regularly could cause hallucinations, but it was the funny psychic scent that had Karla's hackles rising.

"What have you done to my Leda?" Karla asked tightly.

Well now this was strange indeed. She expected such behavior from David, or Mr. Corins, but not Carolyne. "Carolyne what's wrong? What do you mean?"

Karla wasn't sure how to respond. She wanted to shake the imposter by the shoulders until Leda came back. But she had no idea how to make that happen. Her jaw clenched. "So, tell me, what do you remember about me?"

Valerie looked even more confused. "You're Carolyne Scoddard. We've been friends since I came here to look after your brother."

"Right," Karla replied flatly. "I was hoping to hear you tell me of it. You know, your first impressions and all."

And hopefully something she would say would let Karla know how to fix this. Before her tempter broke and she punched Leda in face and hope that broke the spell.

Valerie scratched absently at her hand where the gremlin had bitten her. It was already healing, but still evident. "Carolyne are you sure you're alright?"
