The Conference of Rulers, Faerie

Leda really wished the Lord of the Merpeople would stop picking at her shields. She could tell that was what he was doing. Staring at her every time he said something that irked her. Which, was a lot. Referring to Commoners, rightful rulers and things like that. She wasn't sure how he might have known that those kinds of things were her triggers, but he'd said she was a bit of a legend among the mers. Maybe her political ideals were part of the legend.
The conference was going fairly well she supposed. She already got on with the Dragons quite well of course. And the Dwarves were gruff, short spoken, and bordering on rude. She respected that, though she suspected the Dwarf King's opinion of her was lessened somewhat, when he found out she didn't drink.
But if there was ever a royalist who truly believed in the right to rule, it was this man. Maybe it was her attempts to explain why the 'commoners' should be given an equal share of all resources as the 'nobles' that did it. Or, maybe she was a little less subtle about pronouncing those words with quotes around them as she thought.
Either way, the Mer Lord, though coldly courteous and correct, seemed to think very little of her, or at least her views.
“If you've something to say,” she snapped at Leander one evening, “Now would be a good time to not say it.”
Leander ignored her and said it anyway. “The Merfolk are not your concern.” he told her. He knew she wouldn't like hearing it, but she needed to. “All that really matters to this conference is that we stay on good enough terms with them that they allow ships to pass along the usual trade routes unmolested, as the sea is their domain. If we can gain their support in any military matters or get better terms in trade with them that would be a nice bonus. But starting a revolution would be just counter productive.”
Leda ground her teeth. She hated this job.
[If anarchism really is a trigger for anyone, I apologize for not putting it behind a cut in the past.]
