Having stolen borrowed the coffee maker from the common room, Leda boiled up the water for the cocoa, and debated lighting some soothing incense. She decided to let that go for the moment. There were also blankets for curling up in. She hoped she'd be able to help ease whatever was troubling Karla.

[For the afore mentioned Karla please. That they met up is okay for broadcast, but I think any details are not.]

Leda wasn't hurt by the rejection, well not enough to really register. She got a mug of her own and stole her room mate's desk chair, pulling it over to Karla. Wrapping a blanket around herself she sat down. "So uhm..." Elves didn't typically ask about one's feelings except among very intimate and good friends.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

Karla shook her head wildly, nearly spilling her cocoa. "No," she said. "Not now. Not yet. It was too--too horrible. Too much."

She glanced down, her hair covering her face. "It makes me feel dirty. I don't want to soil you, too."

Leda reached out to lay a comforting hand on her shoulder. She'd never seen Karla this upset, and wanted desperately to help. "Okay." she said. "If you want to though...I'm not exactly unspoiled you know, Floe?"

"Maybe not but this is...different. Wrong. I just--don't." She sipped her cocoa, looking into the swirling depths. "Talk about something else. Anything else."

Leda gave her shoulder a soft squeeze, and let her hand rest there. She was silent for a moment while she searched for another topic. "Ever been trick or treating?"

Karla shook her head. "Nope. That's a Halloween, tradition, right?" she asked. She'd heard bits about Halloween from friends. "People have mentioned going and doing this tricking and treating, but I don't entirely know what that is."

"I'll explain Halloween too you to if you want." Leda smiled. "But basically, trick or treating, you dress up in a costume. Any costume. Some people go as something scary, some go as their favorite fictional character. Didi's dressing up as a girl from 1920's Earth. But anyway, then you go around town, and go up to people's houses or business, and when they answer the door, you yell 'Trick or Treat'. And they give you candy."

"Just because it is the tradition?" Karla asked, sipping her cocoa. "I like that tradition. How did it start?"

Leda had to think about that one. "Well, the story I heard, is that waaaaaay back a long time ago, when Halloween was a religious holiday and not a secular one, people would dress up in some kind of disguise. And then they'd go door to door, and, people would pretend they were, what they were dressed up as. Usually something scary then I guess. And they'd give them something to leave them in peace. As like, a symbolic gesture to the spirits or something."

How accurate that was, Leda had no idea. Elves were a little confused about many Human beliefs and traditions, though they embraced the ones they liked.

"That makes very little sense," Karla told her genially. "But little in this world does, I guess."

"Yeah it's a weird holiday. It's been kinda blurred through centuries of cultural mixing and commercialism. All I know for certain is that it all started out as a festival called Sowan spelled Samhain, where the barrier between the world of the dead and the world of the living was really really thin. Almost non-existent."

"Why do you even have that barrier?" Karla asked. "In this world, I though dead was dead."

Except for vampires.

"Ooohhhhh that's getting into a whole thing that people have been debating since the beginning of everything." She shrugged. "There's ghosts, but not everyone believes in them. Course, for a long time, no one believed in Elves either."
